Messingham WI was formed in 1931 and has enjoyed a long association with Messingham Show.
The provision of light refreshments follows the traditional ethos of the Women’s Institute, emphasising the value of home made cakes and tea or coffee served in china cups.
The WI marquee also houses the adult and children’s competition entries.
The Adult Categories are firmly rooted in WI tradition, jams, pickles, lemon curd, cakes and tray
brakes.
- The handicraft section features crochet, knitting and hand and machine sewing .
- The floral section includes single bloom, a specific named display and floral arrangement in an unusual container.
Cups are awarded for certain categories and for best entry.
The Children’s Section is displayed around the walls of the marquee, where art work from Messingham School and three schools from outlaying villages is hung.
After judging, each year group is awarded a first, receiving a rosette and certificate, second and third receiving certificates.
There is a cup awarded for best school of the show.
The special school has a separate category which changes every year, previous entries have included a decorated mask and jewellery made out of pasta.
Little Imps choose their own subject for the year.
WI meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at Messingham Village Hall at 7 pm.
Visitors are most welcome, it’s not all “Jam and Jerusalem”.
